We’ve
explored the south west corner and south of Western Australia with a
little incursion to Wave Rock and the gold
mining fields around Kalgoorlie. Again we encountered beautiful
coastlines, stunning rock formations, sand dunes, giant trees,
farmland with a wide variety of crops and the amazing outback.
We
fell compelled to have a taste at some of the local products such as
wine from the Margaret River region, fruits and berries, olive oil,
cheese and chocolate (yes, there were some cows as well), even
truffles. We missed out though on crayfish and trouts despite having
seen them very closely during an unexpected dive while canoeing!
To
keep a good balance with so much indulgence, we kept our feet going.
Some of the walks were quite challenging, either by their steepness
for Armande (Bluff Knoll) or their height for Jean-Philippe (tree top
and sky walk).
Although
done at the last minute, our itinerary had to be altered a few times
due to either road or weather conditions, closed areas (controlled
fires, to avoid the spread of diseases, road work,…) and
accommodating some necessary minor repairs to the car and
camper-trailer.
By
the way, the zip of the camper-trailer cover is now working
beautifully. Yeeha!
To
spice it up a bit, we went through an early morning small earthquake
in Albany (5.4 on the Richter scale) which shook our bed-on-wheels a
fair bit.
Some
annoying issues have been the flies, the flies and the flies, as well
as a frequently cold, windy and wet weather keeping us unfortunately
out of the water. The total fire ban imposed at this time of the year
has also dumped a bit our spirits. We are missing our dampers (even
burned) and lovely evening campfires !
This has been a fairly densely populated region, what’s coming next may be quite different….
